:: Camponotus :: (SFW)
soundcheck : Crystal Castles - Bitter Hearts

I just finished watching a sequel to one of my favourite childhood films (or series, in this case) and I want to talk about this guy:

Yes, he's 22 - enjoying his prime in the entertainment industry as perhaps the hottest young male lead to star in quite a number of great films. He probably makes more money than any one of us can dream of possessing and the list of material benefits goes on.

However, has anyone stopped to realise how no other person has managed to successfully represent popular icons of the 80's, especially being someone who grew up in (or was born in) that era?

Think about it.

The first generation of the transformers saw two leading human characters in the animated series - Sparkplug (what a name) and Spike. Father and son of the Witwicky family. Some twenty-something years later, the 2007 live action film release of the Transformers sees the male protagonist, Sam Witwicky, acted out by Shia LaBeouf.

So who's Sam? No, he's not a descendant that has to put up with having a parent named 'Spike', or worse, a grandparent named 'Sparkplug'. Instead - Sam's character is the reincarnation of Spike Witwicky, of the 80's animated series.

The lucky lad has already signed up for three film instalments, and it has been theorised that the moniker 'Spike' could possibly be earned as a nickname in the next sequel. In the 1985 animated movie, Spike takes a ride on a hot rod. Let's see them film that.

Score: LaBeouf - 1, Jealous 80's Children - 0

2008 sees the release of yet another sequel to the Indiana Jones saga. The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull reacquaints audiences with a graying Harrison Ford as the good doctor himself, but wait - what's this? Scruffy looking, leather jacket wearing young punk on a pseudo-harley type motorcycle? It can only be Shia LaBeouf. Halfway through the movie (spoiler warning), Indie meets up with an old lover (a character from the 1984 sequel) and lo and behold - they discover that lad in leather is indeed the illegitimate son of Dr Jones (end of spoiler). Towards the end, a scene has a gust of wind toss Indie's trademark hat towards the feet of the new Henry Jones Jr. Blatant enough? Maybe not.

Score: LaBeouf - 2, Jealous 80's Children - 0

If you think about it, scoring those two roles puts him higher up on the list of modern-day 80's icons than anyone else. Now all he needs to do is play Marty McFly in a Back to the Future remake and I'm sure the magazines will be crazy over the idea of 80's reincarnates.
